Description

  • Get to know Cajamarca, one of the most historic cities in Peru. There, the visitor will know the Inca and pre-Inca archaeological sites throughout the city. In addition, you will appreciate the colonial buildings. The tour includes a visit to the Main Square, the Santa Catalina Church, the historic Rescue Room, the San Francisco Church, the Belen Church, the Colonial Men’s Hospital, the Colonial Women’s Hospital, the Santa Apolonia Hill and the ceremonial altars (the famous Inca’s Chair). This is the experience

  • Get to know the great history of Cajamarca, a colonial, Inca and pre-Inca city that shows everywhere the historical monuments. The service starts at 10:00 a.m. with the pick up from your hotel. Then you will visit the Plaza de Armas of the city where you will see colonial monuments such as the Church of Santa Catalina de Alejandría, known as the Cathedral of Cajamarca. Just a few steps away you will visit the Church of San Francisco and the famous Cuarto del Rescate. In a tourist transport you will travel to the Santa Apolonia hill with panoramic views of the city. You will also visit the Men’s Hospital (today a medical museum) and the Women’s Hospital (today an archeological-ethnological museum). The service ends with the transfer to the door of your hotel at about 1:00 pm.

Itinerary

  • The tour starts with the pick up of the visitor from the door of his hotel in the center of the city of Cajamarca (where most of the tourist hotels are located). Pick up is at 10 am on average.
  • In the Main Square of Cajamarca the visitor will admire the colonial buildings with great historical value, such as the Cathedral (church of Santa Catalina de Alejandría). This religious temple was built in the 17th century. It stands out for its beautiful baroque façade with a main altar decorated in gold leaf. There, you will also visit the church of San Francisco, a colonial temple built in the 17th century, with a solid structure belonging to the Franciscan order. For a small extra cost, you can visit the Museum of Religious Art.
  • A few steps from the Plaza de Armas of Cajamarca is the Cuarto del Rescate, a beautiful granite building made by the Incas famous for being the prison of the Inca emperor Atahualpa, imprisoned and killed by the Spaniards in 1533. This room is famous for being the room that was filled with gold and silver as a ransom from the Inca to Francisco Pizarro.
  • Very close to the center of Cajamarca is the colonial church of Belen, a building dating from the eighteenth century and also includes the former Hospital de Varones (now a medical museum) and the Hospital de Mujeres (now an archaeological-ethnological museum). Inside, the visitor will appreciate its neoclassical altar, baroque decoration and more treasures. In addition, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the history of the city through its museums.
  • On board a tourist transport the visitor will travel to the Santa Apolonia hill, a beautiful viewpoint located 500 meters above the city. There, in addition to the beautiful panoramic views of Cajamarca, there are beautiful gardens and stone stairways decorated for beautiful photographs. At this point you can also visit the chapel in honor of the Virgin of Fatima. At the top there is also a stone seat, called the ‘Silla del Inca’ (Inca’s chair). It is believed that these two carved stones served as a seat and surveillance point of the city of Cajamarca in Inca times.
