Are there hotels in Machu Picchu?

Every year more than 1.5 million people visit Machu Picchu. Many of them decide to stay the night as close to the Inca city as possible. To meet this demand there are dozens of hotels of all kinds and comforts.

However, there is only one hotel located a few meters from Machu Picchu. This is the 5-star Belmond Sanctuary Lodge hotel, which includes beautiful green areas that harmonize with the natural landscape that surrounds the Inca city.

The rest of the hotels are located approximately 10 kilometers from Machu Picchu, in the famous town of Aguas Calientes. This town is a mandatory stop to get to the Inca city. For this reason, many hotels of 5, 4, 3 stars and more were built there.

It is recommended to book hotels online and in advance. Thus, you can also access good prices. However, it is also possible to get accommodation on the day of the trip. This especially in the low season of tourism (from November to March).

Camp in Machu Picchu

The municipal campsite of Machu Picchu is located on Hermanos Ayar avenue in the town of Aguas Calientes (near the Ruinas bridge). It is a green area with space to place tents. It has toilets and showers for men and women. It is the cheapest option to spend the night on the trip to the Inca city.

The cost of the municipal camping site is 15 Peruvian soles (5 US dollars). The disadvantage is that it does not have spaces that protect against the rain. For this reason, it is recommended to bring waterproof tents or place plastic. Backpackers are the people who most like this option.

Aguas Calientes is the closest town to Machu Picchu (only 10 kilometers away) but it is not the only one. Other options are Ollantaytambo (30 kilometers) or Santa Teresa (20 kilometers). In both places there are also good lodging options.
